The UCL Student Survey Report focuses on the perspectives and experiences of pupils in England regarding climate change and sustainability education.
Conducted between March and May 2024, the survey gathered responses from 2,429 pupils aged 11-14 (Years 7-9) across 30 schools.
The report highlights significant concerns among pupils about the future, with 87% expressing worry about climate change’s impact.
Despite recognising the importance of learning about climate change, only 46% of pupils enjoy it, and there are notable disparities in engagement based on gender and socio-economic status.
Girls and pupils from more advantaged backgrounds are more likely to feel anxious and sad about climate change and find the subject more enjoyable and valuable.
The report also identifies gaps in the curriculum, with most climate change education occurring in geography and science classes.
Pupils expressed a desire for more outdoor learning and a broader inclusion of climate change topics across various subjects.
The report concludes with recommendations to address inequalities in education and improve climate change and sustainability teaching across all subjects.
