UNESCO Greening curriculum guidance teaching and learning for climate action

The “Green School Quality Standard” by UNESCO outlines a framework for the education sector to integrate sustainability and climate action into their daily operations and curriculum.

It emphasises a holistic, whole-institution approach (WIA) with four key areas: governance, facilities, teaching, and community engagement.

This standard aims to transform schools into hubs of climate resilience, fostering knowledge, skills, and proactive community involvement. Through participatory decision-making, sustainable practices, and education strategies, the framework encourages schools worldwide to meet ambitious targets, notably greening at least 50% of all schools by 2030. This initiative supports a unified global effort toward educational and environmental progress.
